Jaw & Clenching

Masseter Botox in Waterloo Region

Botox for the muscle at the back of your jaw, whether you want a softer lower face or you are tired of clenching. $9 a unit, placed by a Nurse Practitioner in St. Jacobs.

The masseter is the muscle at the back of your jaw, the one you can feel move when you bite down. Like any muscle, it gets bigger with use, and clenching uses it a lot. A lot of people find out from their dentist, who sees the wear on the teeth before anything shows up in the mirror. Others come to us because their lower face has squared off. The treatment is the same either way, and it is not the same as the Botox you would have in your forehead.

WHAT THE MASSETER DOES

A neuromodulator like Botox, placed into the masseter, relaxes it, so the muscle does less work and gradually reduces in size. The lower face softens and the jawline reads narrower from the front.

Most people feel the muscle start to relax in three to five days, and the full effect is there by about three weeks. Some slimming shows up right away, and it keeps building the longer you maintain it.

IF YOU CLENCH OR GRIND

A lot of people come in for the masseter because they clench. Sometimes a dentist has flagged it, and sometimes they have been waking up with a tight jaw or wearing through a night guard for years.

Relaxing the masseter reduces how hard the muscle can contract, which takes some of the force out of the clench. It does not stop the habit, and it is not a treatment for the jaw joint itself, so if something is going on inside the joint that is a conversation for your dentist or physician first.

WHAT IT COSTS

Masseter Botox at Bonita is $9 a unit, a little under our $9.50 rate for cosmetic areas like the forehead and the 11s.

The masseter takes 15 to 25 units per side. Both sides are treated, so a full treatment is 30 to 50 units.

Units Cost
Lighter dose, both sides 30 units $270
Typical, both sides 40 units $360
Stronger dose, both sides 50 units $450

Your specific dose will depend on how strong the muscle is, which Jessica assesses in person rather than from a photo.

The consultation is $50 and comes off your treatment, same day or when you decide to move forward. If a two week follow-up is needed, they are complimentary apart from any additional units.

WHEN IS IT NOT THE RIGHT TREATMENT?

Masseter Botox does not suit everyone. If the fullness in your lower face comes from fat or skin rather than muscle, relaxing the muscle will not change it, and if your face is already narrow, taking volume out of the lower third can read as hollow rather than defined.

Jessica will tell you at the consultation if she does not think this will be an effective treatment for you.
