FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Sun damage occurs when ultraviolet (UV) radiation triggers the overproduction of melanin in certain areas of the skin, resulting in flat brown spots, uneven tone, and a dull or blotchy complexion. Hyperpigmentation can also be caused by post-inflammatory responses (such as acne or irritation), melasma (which is hormonally driven and often worsens during perimenopause), and the natural aging process. Understanding the type and cause of your pigmentation guides the most effective treatment approach.

  • We offer a range of targeted treatments for pigmentation, including IPL (intense pulsed light), which is highly effective for discrete sun spots and uneven tone; PicoSure Pro laser, which is well suited for stubborn pigmentation, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation; and medical-grade chemical peels and skincare protocols using AlumierMD and ZO Skin Health to support ongoing pigmentation management at home.

  • Sun spots (also called solar lentigines) are flat, well-defined brown spots caused primarily by cumulative UV exposure. They tend to respond well to IPL and laser treatment. Melasma is a more complex, deeper form of pigmentation driven by hormonal fluctuations, sun exposure, and heat, and it is significantly more challenging to treat. Melasma requires a careful, targeted approach and a strong commitment to sun protection to maintain results. We assess which type of pigmentation you have before recommending treatment.

  • This depends on the type of pigmentation and how well sun protection is maintained after treatment. Sun spots can return with ongoing UV exposure. Melasma is particularly prone to recurrence and requires ongoing management. We always pair in-clinic treatments with a home care protocol and strong emphasis on daily SPF to protect and prolong your results.

  • The number of treatments varies by the type and depth of pigmentation. Sun spots often respond in 1 to 3 IPL sessions. Stubborn or deep pigmentation may require more sessions with PicoSure Pro. We will give you an honest assessment of what to expect at your consultation, including a realistic timeline for results.

  • Some pigmentation treatments carry a higher risk on deeper skin tones, particularly IPL, which must be used with great care or avoided on certain skin types. PicoSure Pro is generally safer across a wider range of skin tones for pigmentation treatment. A thorough consultation and skin type assessment is essential before any pigmentation treatment to ensure we select the safest and most effective approach for your skin.
